China Sets Sights on Expanding Auto Parts Exports Globally

Where car sales boom so will the auto parts segment. Such truism was played out in China in 2009 with its auto parts makers posting a banner year, thanks to the official subsidies that drove up new car sales and hence also fueling downstream demand for auto parts. Most auto parts makers were especially busy meeting mounting orders in the last quarter, traditionally the sales peak season. Makers estimate that orders placed in the fourth quarter grew by at least 10% from the previous quarter.

When it's cheaper to buy than manufacture ... what do you do?
It's that time of year when top 10 lists are created from the flotsam of the current year's sales -- and there was a lot of flotsam in 2009. Cell and module prices have crashed by (in some cases) 50% from 2008 levels. In many cases it is much cheaper to outsource or toll than it is to manufacture product in-house. This means arriving at an accurate count of what was sold will be difficult, the potential of overcounting the industry significantly more probable, possibly rendering the usefulness of the annual top 10 lists moot.

Taipei, Jan. 6, 2009 (CENS)--Taiwan exported US$3.23 billion worth of machine tools in the first 10 months of 2008, a moderate 14.2% year-on-year growth, said the non-profit Taiwan Machine Tool Foundation (TMTF).
