AUO to Set Up Liquid Crystal Module Plant in Northern China
Taipei, Aug. 18, 2009 (CENS)--To further tap the huge and rapidly rising LCD TV market in China, AU Optronics Corp. (AUO), the largest thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panel manufacturer in Taiwan, and its LCD-TV contract-assembly subsidiary BriView Technology Corp. plan to set up a new LCD TV panel module assembly plant in northern China.
The construction of the LCD module (LCM) plant will kick off as early as the fourth quarter.
Paul Peng, executive vice president of global business unit of AUO, pointed out that AUO has three LCM plants all over China, and the fourth is expected to take AUO`s reach to northern China.
Industry sources said that AUO`s fourth LCM plant in China aims to win more orders from Haier, on of the largest TV makers in China, a report Peng refused to comment.
Sales of LCD TVs in China is expected to increase 65% year-on-year (YoY) this year to reach 24 million units, and China is expected to become the world`s largest market for such product in 2011.
Peng said establishing a new LCM plant in China would directly supply downstream system makers without paying import tariffs on products shipped from Taiwan.
This year is a starting period for BriView, Peng said, and in 2010 the LCD TV assembler is expected to see explosive sales growth by winning orders from big customers in Japan, South Korea, mainland China and affiliate BenQ Corp. in Taiwan.
