China Mobile to Team Up With MediaTek, HTC on Development of 3G Phones
Taipei, Aug. 21, 2009 (CENS)--Wang Jianzhou, president of China Mobile Ltd., China`s largest telecom service provider, will arrive in Taiwan on Aug. 24, reportedly to sign a cooperation contract with the island`s MediaTek Inc. and High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC) to jointly develop 3G phones based on China`s TD-SCDMA (Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) standards, according to industry sources.
MediaTek is among the world`s top three designers of handset IC (integrated circuit) chips and well known for its unparalleled influence in China`s mobile phone manufacturing industry, while HTC is a globally leading developer of smartphone. Technically helped by the two Taiwanese companies, China Mobile is planning to explore the global market for communication services.
Accordingly, China Mobile is going to invest RMB150 billion (US$21.95 at US$1: RMB6.832) in 2009 to 2011 in the development of 3G phones, planning to launch its TD-SCDMA-based telecom services in 238 different cities of the world by the end of 2009 and build a total of 160,000 station bases for operating 3G communication by the end of 2011. The plan will hopefully benefit a bumper crop of Taiwanese suppliers in related industries in the future.
Coincidentally, Taiwan`s Far Eastone Telecommunications Co., Ltd., a top-three telecom company in Taiwan, will also assist China Mobile to establish its laboratory of experiments of TD-SCDMA standard-based products in Hsinchu Science Park of Hsinchu County, northern Taiwan.
In light of huge business opportunities in China`s communication and related applications market, a dozen of Taiwan`s large-sized enterprises from communication and electronic sectors, including Acer Inc., Asustek Computer Inc., Kinpo Group, Chunghwa Telecom Co., Taiwan Mobile Co., etc., will also arrange meetings with Wang during his personal visit on the island next week.
