27th July 2009, 6:15 WST
The head of one of China’s biggest steel producers has told Premier Colin Barnett he wants to build WA’s first steel mill at the Oakajee industrial park outside Geraldton.
Zhang Xiao Gang, head of the giant Ansteel group, plans to use his company’s joint venture with Mid-West miner Gindalbie to feed an integrated iron and steel plant and rolling mill at the developing project.
Dr Zhang and Mr Barnett signed an agreement at the weekend for a feasibility study between Ansteel and the Department of State Development.
