Export-Import Bank in Taiwan and China May Work Together

Taipei, June 17, 2009 (CENS)--With growing financial exchanges on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, the government-run Export-Import Bank (EIB) in Taiwan will very likely work with its counterpart in China to offer credit insurance services to Taiwanese enterprises in China that apply for financing there.

Wang Chi-chung, executive vice president of EIB, indicated that the cooperation between the two banks cannot be realized unless the governments on the two sides sign an MOU to further open financial markets.

Nevertheless, EIB has already offered since last year export credit insurance to enterprises in Taiwan selling products to China, and its Chinese partner to handle such insurance business in China is the China Export and Credit Insurance Corp. (CECI).

With the cooperation from CECI, EIB can get credit information on Chinese importers that import products from Taiwan. If the said importers go bankrupt and can not pay for goods purchased from suppliers in Taiwan, then EIB can ask CECI to help with collection.

Moreover, EIB intends to collaborate with IEBC to offer financial services to Taiwanese enterprises on the other side of the Taiwan Strait in the near future. IEBC is one of China`s three policy-oriented banks and subordinate to the State Council, aiming to help the Chinese government to carry out foreign trade policies, financial policies and diplomatic policies as well as financially support the import and export of electric machinery and high-tech products for the country.
